Genomic variation in Plasmodium vivax malaria reveals regions under selective pressure
BACKGROUND Although Plasmodium vivax contributes to almost half of all malaria cases outside Africa, it has been relatively neglected compared to the more deadly P. falciparum. It is known that P. vivax populations possess high genetic diversity, differing geographically potentially due to different vector species, host genetics and environmental factors. RESULTS We analysed the high-quality ...
متن کاملCpG Islands Undermethylation in Human Genomic Regions under Selective Pressure
DNA methylation at CpG islands (CGIs) is one of the most intensively studied epigenetic mechanisms. It is fundamental for cellular differentiation and control of transcriptional potential. DNA methylation is involved also in several processes that are central to evolutionary biology, including phenotypic plasticity and evolvability. In this study, we explored the relationship between CpG island...
متن کاملPlasmodium vivax Malaria
We report 11 cases of severe Plasmodium vivax malaria in Bikaner (western India). Patients exhibited cerebral malaria, renal failure, circulatory collapse, severe anemia, hemoglobinurea, abnormal bleeding, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and jaundice. Peripheral blood microscopy, parasite antigen-based assays, and parasite 18s rRNA gene-based polymerase chain reaction showed the presence o...
متن کاملPlasmodium vivax cerebral malaria.
We report two cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria (both aged 12 years) complicated by seizures and symptoms of diffuse meningoencephalitis. One had predominantly meningeal signs while in the other, purely encephalitis features were present. Both cases were treated with artesunate. Rarely, cerebral malaria is a presenting complication or occurs during the course of P. vivax infection.
متن کاملPlasmodium vivax malaria vaccines
Malaria is one of the few diseases in which morbidity is still measured in hundreds of millions of cases every year. Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are responsible for nearly all the malaria cases in the world and despite difficulties in obtaining an exact number, estimates indicate an astonishing 349-552 million clinical cases of malaria due to P. falciparum in 2007 and between 132...
